Learning is a lifelong process and help can move us forward a stone’s throw or a giant leap. So, it is natural for us to seek out those that can help us, either directly or through inspiration. We read blogs and books, seek advice and mentorship and even study what others are doing. This is all well and good, but all of the learning or mentorship in the world doesn’t help if you don’t apply it.
You have undoubtedly heard the old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink”. If you are the horse that is staring at its reflection in the water, what’s the challenge? It could be that you are intimidated. It could be that you have a big ego. It could be that you are lazy and want someone else to do the work for you. Or, it could be that you are afraid- afraid of breaking outside of your comfort zone, afraid that the advice and mentorship is going to be lorded over you in the future or even worse, afraid of being as successful as you can be.
A teacher can lead you to water, but you must drink it yourself. A teacher can open the door, but you still need to walk through. Don’t forgo your potential because of your own insecurities. Nothing is scarier than enduring the status quo for the rest of time because you were unwilling to take that very last step.
